Accessing Counselling
I offer telephone counselling as it makes it possible for me to work with you wherever you live. Telephone counselling is not the same as calling someone working on an advice line. The work we do together will be just as empowering and effective as if we were working together face to face.
In my experience, what we might feel we lose out on in not being able to see each other is more than compensated for because we listen to each other much more closely over the phone. This auditory intimacy together with visual privacy allows most people to talk with greater ease about difficult issues, particularly things they feel ashamed about.
Telephone counselling creates a deeper sense of closeness at a safe distance. Many people feel less inhibited or less guarded when they feel safe, receiving therapy in their own home.
I find that that most of my clients find by the end of their first session, they are completely comfortable having therapy without their therapist being in the same room.
Telephone counselling has other advantages. Provided that you ensure that you have private, uninterrupted space, you can relax in your own home, avoid the travel costs and time getting to and from sessions and be at home immediately after we say goodbye when your session ends.
I also offer Skype counselling which has most of the advantages of telephone counselling. That said, I normally recommend telephone counselling as in my experience poor visual and sound quality can be distracting. If you would like to use Skype as a cheaper alternative to making a phone call, we can work together without the video.
